Amputees on Ice

Image of amputee with prosthetic legs enjoying iceskating at the AerodomeAction on the ice is something that we don’t see very often in Houston, our warm weather home often precludes us from the adventure of winter sports. However, that was not the case for amputees, friends and staff from the Amputee & Prosthetic Center. On a hot day in August, our Amputees in Action hit the ice in the Willowbrook Aerodome for an Aeros slap shot game, sled hockey, and free ice skating lessons.

The day started off with some refreshments and a quick support group meeting. Then the amputees and their families took to the ice like ducks to water! You would have never guessed that many of these folks were warm weather natives by the way they handled themselves on to that frozen H2O!

After getting acquainted with their arctic equipment, the team was joined in the rink by the STAR Skaters for a friendly game of sled hockey.

STARskaters is a remarkable organization providing an on ice skating experience for therapy and recreation for children and young adults with any type of physical or developmental disability.

Needless to say, it’s an effortless and graceful feeling to glide across the ice, a feeling that our amputees say they are grateful to have experienced and won’t soon forget.
