Stepping Ahead: A CEU Course with Bob Gailey

Description of the Course: Updates on Amputee Care and Prosthetic Technology is a presentation designed to offer clinicians a comprehensive overview of the most current methods of amputee rehabilitation and prosthetic technology.

Upon completion of the presentation, the participants will be able to:

  1. Identify appropriate measurement tools to assess functional outcomes of lower limb amputees.
  2. Describe specific exercises and training techniques designed to improve gait and prosthetic function of the lower limb amputee.
  3. Describe the functional capacity of current and future prosthetic technology based on the available literature and research.
  4. Develop a treatment program to address functional issues that concern lower limb amputees.

About Bob Gailey:

Robert S. Gailey, PhD, PT (Associate Professor) has been at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy for over 20 years. He also has a joint appointment as a Health Science Researcher with Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is the Director of the Functional Outcomes Research and Evaluation Center. His doctorate in prosthetics was received from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where he developed the Amputee Mobility Predictor an objective measure of amputee function. He has worked in the hospital acute care and rehabilitation settings as well as private practice during his 25 years as a physical therapist.

He has lectured extensively around the world on a wide variety of topics related to orthopedics, prosthetics and sports medicine for athletes with disabilities. He has authored over 50 publications and has continued research efforts directed toward: amputee rehabilitation, the biomechanics and metabolic cost of prosthetic gait, functional assessment and athletic pursuits of the amputee as well as other athletes with disabilities across the life span. He has work as a special advisor to the Department of Defense with the development of the military amputee rehabilitation program. He remains active with many organizations including the Amputee Coalition of America and the American Physical Therapy Association. He also participated as a member of the United States Disabled Sports Medial Team in the Barcelona and Atlanta Paralympic Games and continues to work with some of the most elite athletes with disabilities from around the world.
