Amputee Peer Visitors
No matter how educated the healthcare team may be, nothing replaces talking to a fellow amputee. A Peer Mentor is an amputee that can truly understand and relate to the challenges and fears of our amputee patients. Answering questions like:
- What is it like to lose a limb?
- When will I receive my prosthetic device?
- What will my limb look like?
- Will I be able to live a “normal” life as an amputee?
The Amputee and Prosthetic Center offers a team of amputee Peer Mentors just like you. From teenagers to patients in their 80’s, men and women of all activity levels are available to talk to amputees or those who may be facing the possibility of amputation. Whether you have lost both of your legs or one arm, we have an amputee peer mentor that can relate to you and discuss what it’s like to be an amputee, from first-hand knowledge.
The Peer Mentor offers:
- Moral support for the patient and their family
- Answers to questions about limb loss
- First hand advice-from life experiences
- Resource and guidance for amputees
- Certified peer support counseling
“If I can’t leave a patient’s room having significantly reduced a recent amputee’s anxiety, then I have not done my job” – Jody Graham, Peer Mentor
